The Mortgage Insurance Fund (MIF), is a division of the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA) that promotes the preservation and revitalization of neighborhoods throughout the State of New York by insuring mortgage loans and thereby encouraging the investment of mortgage capital by commercial and public lenders.


The Attorney/Assistant Counsel will be responsible for drafting SONYMA Mortgage Insurance Fund (MIF) Commitments to Insure for all MIF project mortgage insurance policies and managing the conversion of MIF Commitments to Policies in Force on permanent mortgage loans. The Attorney will assist with MIF programs, Agency administrative matters and other legal areas as required. The Attorney will also perform legal services related to the MIF’s loan management and mortgage enforcement efforts.


  • Must be admitted to the practice of law in New York State;
  • Must have a minimum of 4 years of legal experience with at least 2 years of experience with real estate law including mortgage financing, secured transactions and affordable housing;
  • Knowledge of environmental law, tax law, rent regulation and municipal finance helpful;
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and outside attorneys and consultants;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills;
  • Record of productivity;
  • Demonstrated history of good record of attendance and punctuality.
