NYSAFAH is committed to expanding opportunities for Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) in the affordable housing industry. In September 2011, NYSAFAH launched a formal MWBE initiative, recognizing the importance of bringing new firms into the affordable housing industry, and of strengthening MWBE developers, subcontractors and others who are already active in the industry.
To date, NYSAFAH has held several MWBE networking and educational events. Among the most successful have been Speed Networking sessions for established NYSAFAH developers and general contractors, with MWBE subcontractors and professional service firms. Through brief interview sessions, MWBE firms learn of concrete opportunities to grow their businesses, while larger developers hear how MWBE firms can provide services to their upcoming projects. Participants walk away with professional opportunities to pursue.
In addition, NYSAFAH has developed partnerships with minority real estate trade associations, co-hosting a Speed Networking session with Hispanics in Real Estate and Construction, and executing a formal Memorandum of Understanding with the African Americans Real Estate Professionals of New York to offer joint programming and reciprocal membership.

HPD Announces Initiative to Expand Opportunities for Minority and Women Owned Businesses
New Programs Will Build Capacity and Increase Participation Among M/WBE Affordable Housing Developers
"HPD's M/WBE initiative formalizes the mentoring relationships New York's leading affordable housing developers have been promoting over the last decade, and will enable us to not only support existing M/WBE firms active the industry, but also cultivate M/WBE firms new to the affordable housing field," said NYSAFAH President Donald Capoccia. "The barriers to entry into the affordable housing industry are high, given the capital requirements and many regulatory burdens specific to the industry. NYSAFAH commends HPD for its new suite of policies and programs - from project-based mentoring, to increased access to capital and back-office capacity - which together will enable more M/WBE firms to not only break into the affordable industry but become leading professionals in the field."
